Back to black and white... and gray. Or is it grey? I have colored pencils from the same company that use both "gray" and "grey." So which one is it? Lately, I've been spelling the color "gray" and using "grey" for people's names. Though I think it's more of an American English vs. British English. American being "gray" and British being "grey." And since the British English is the original, that means "grey" is the correct spelling. Why am I even agonizing over this? ...or is it "agonising"?

USA - gray; Britain/Oz - grey. "Monochrome" is probably the word you're looking for !

I'm from the USA, but have always spelled it "grey". I was an army brat, and spent some time in Europe, but only in Germany, and have no desire to spell it "grau", so that's likely not a factor.

If you think that the originator of the language determines the proper way to spell things... let me point you to the original, untranslated Beowulf. While it was admittedly written back before spelling was invented, the originator of the language determines the proper way to spell things rule says those spelling rules are out of order, usurpers of the true English. I considered trying to reproduce a sample here, but I don't want to punish myself like that.

Personally, I think the American way for this particular word follows the rules better: gray like play for the color, and the proper spelling/pronunciation of a name is up to the bearer of that name.
